  • A Promise to My Wife Who Passed Away

Name:Grandpa Chen Age:80 Gender:Male Diagnosis:Ischemic Stroke Treatment period:Jan. 26 - Feb. 17, 2017 (22 days, 10 treatments) A Sweet Promise Between Husband and Wife Grandpa and grandma Chen have been running a small grocery shop they opened together when they were teens for 60 years. To support their family, they worked tirelessly everyday, never taking a single day off work. However, it killed grandpa Chen to see his beautiful wife work so hard. Thus, it became one of grandpa Chen’s biggest dreams to one day take grandma Chen travelling around Taiwan. They made a promise to each other that once they retired, they would go on a long vacation, visiting all the places grandma Chen has always wanted to visit. It was this sweet secret promise between the two of them that got them through all the pain and hardships throughout the years. Unfortunately, just when their dream was within reach, grandma Chen fell ill. Grandpa Chen had to close the grocery story to take care of grandma Chen, and the car they saved up for years to buy for the trip, was used instead to commute to and from the hospital. The next seven years, grandpa Chen worked even harder than he had when he was running the grocery store. He was always by his wife’s bedside, battling her battle with the disease alongside her. He promised her that as soon as she got better, they would go on their trip, he already had the bags packed. But grandma Chen never made it. Overcome with grief, grandpa Chen’s body gave up. The many years of sleepless nights caused grandpa Chen to suffer from a stroke. Grandma Chen had only just left the hospital, now he was sent back — ironically — to the same room. Grandpa Chen was also diagnosed with Parkinson’s. It almost felt like too big of a joke. Life had already taken his beloved wife away, now it’s even trying to rip away his memories of her. That, was unacceptable. He had to fight on for her memories. Getting Healthy to Travel the World Grandpa Chen’s daughter-in-law took him to Liu Shun for treatment. His symptoms of Parkinson’s were improved. Whereas he was constantly afraid of falling while walking with a walker, he could now walk steadily without having to rely on a walker. Moreover, his strength and stamina was improved. Grandpa Chen shared with us during his treatment that whereas he would get tired walking five times around the park, he could now walk ten laps without feeling tired. His goal is to get strong enough so that he could honor the promise he made to his wife, by going on the trip with her.

  • Mahjong Master Loses His Right Hand

Name:Mr. Wu Age:61 Gender:Male Diagnosis:Ischemic Stroke Date of Diagnosis:January 2017 Chronic Disease:hypertension, hyperlipidemia, poor renal function Treatment period:Jan. 26 - Feb. 17, 2017 (22 days, 10 treatments) Some mahjong is fun, but staying up all not might be too much fun Mr. Wu was one of those mahjong master you would see in Kung Fu movies. He would often spend hours on end at his friends house immersed in the complex game of skill and chance. One night, as he hung out at his friend’s for a game of mahjong as per usual, he felt his right arm grow unusually stiff. Mind focused on the win within reach, he brushed the feeling off as a posture problem. Yet, the weird sensation persisted for hours and grew significantly worse to the point where his arm started to feel limp. Sensing something might be wrong, Wu finally went to the hospital, where he was told that he has had an ischemic stroke. From a dispirited man to a happy jogger After staying at the hospital for a few days, a friend referred Wu to Liu Shun. In Wu’s first visit to the clinic, his many symptoms post-stroke, including paralyzed right upper limb, weak right lower limb, slurred speech, choking, and drooling, clearly dispirited him. However, by his first check-up post-treatment on March 30th, he could hardly mask his excitement and was quick to share with us all his improvements. After 22 days, not only could Wu raise his arm completely, he could walk approximately 200 meters without a walker, and could even jog for a little bit! Back in the mahjong game! “He is too stubborn,” Wu’s daughter shrugs, “Even though dad always complained (with occasional swearing, might I add) that the treatment doesn’t work, he knows full well that with each treatment, he could raise his arm higher, stand on his legs longer. We could all see it.” She chuckles, “Not to mention he is back at his mahjong games now.” “Three-hour treatment primetime is some bullsh*t” During Wu’s check-up, he shared with Dr. Wang many details about what it was like for him in the hospital when he first had a stroke. “I got to the hospital alright, but apparently not fast enough for a treatment.” Because he hadn’t made it to the hospital within three hours of his initial stroke, there was nothing the hospital could do except to put him in rehabilitation. “When my friend came to visit me in the hospital, he told me about Liu Shun,” Wu said, “I thought, what the hell, might as well bet on the chances and give it a try. I’m lucky that I did, otherwise I probably would have never gotten better. It’s crazy that not more people know about your treatment, Dr. Wang. You need to work harder and let people out there know that the ‘three-hour treatment primetime’ is some bullsh*t.”

  • A Soldier’s Way Back to Dignity

Name:Mr. Li Age:66 Gender:Male Diagnosis:Ischemic Stroke Date of Diagnosis:November 4th, 2015 Chronic Disease:hypertension, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia Treatment period:Nov 10 to Dec 9, 2015 (29 days, 13 treatments) It happens to even the healthiest of us 66 year-old Li is a veteran who kept up with a strict routine even after he retired from the military. He never skipped a day of exercising and was known among his friends for being the disciplined “health nut.” Li’s physical fitness was something that he had always been proud of. Thus, when he felt a sudden sense of numbness in the left side of his body during a family gathering one day, he brushed it off. “It’s probably nothing,” he thought to himself, confident in his consistent healthy routine. However, an hour later, he was rushed to the hospital after he had fainted in front of all his family and friends. The diagnosis from the hospital was that he had suffered from an ischemic stroke, which completely paralyzed the left side of his body. From then on, Li’s life depended on the assistance of others. He required help to perform even the most mundane tasks, such as eating and bathing. Once an honorable military man, Li felt like he was stripped off of everything that once defined him. Beginning of a journey based on trust and determination However, not even a disease could stop a determined soldier. After tireless searching and asking around, from a trusted friend, Li learned of Liu Shun. He resolutely left the hospital after he was discharged from the ICU. He chose to believe in Dr. Wang and Liu Shun’s years of experience. And had also made up his mind that he would stand back up again. Where there is a will, there is a way In his near one-month-long treatment, Li went from complete paralysis to being able to stand and walk. We were not only amazed by the huge progress he had made, but perhaps more so, his radiating positivity throughout treatment that was oh-so-rare. When asked about his positive mindset, he answered simply, “I believe in Dr. Wang.” He took a moment to reflect and said, “I could feel that Dr. Wang genuinely wants to help me. He was always so patient to explain the treatment to me and was always so encouraging of me. Because of that, I had complete trust in him. “I did everything as he said. You have to understand, that wasn’t easy,” he laughed. “A two-hour physical therapy could feel like a lifetime, especially to someone like me whose age was above the age of 60. However, all I had to do was to remind myself that I am a military man, and we soldiers don’t ever give up! I was determined to do everything in my power to return my life to normal.” And that he did. We all watched as Li walked out of Liu Shun, our eyes dampened by tears of admiration.

  • Don't Let Your Job Be the Death of You

Name:Mr. Huang Age:52 Gender:Male Diagnosis:Hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding) Date of Diagnosis:May 26, 2017 Chronic Disease:hypertension, hyperlipidemia, arrhythmia Treatment period:May 26th to July 6th, 2017 (41 days, 15 treatments) The dark reality you never knew about running a successful factory Mr. Huang, from Taichung, had been working in China for years. Single-handedly, he built his packaging factory from the ground up to the success it is today. But the cost of this success was a compromised health caused by years of pent up stress from work, chronic insomnia, and business-related social engagements involving alcohol. One day in 2010, young Mr. Huang suddenly collapsed in his factory, without any previous warning signs. He was hurried to the hospital where he found out that he had just had a hemorrhagic stroke. He flew back to Taiwan for surgeries, but to no avail. His symptoms post-stroke persisted. He could no longer communicate clearly; he felt weak, his hand numb, and his quality of life drastically deteriorated. Disappointed with modern medicine, he returned to work in China to take his mind off of his frustration. Are you brave enough to give yourself another chance? Seven years passed without Huang attempting any treatment. He had accepted that this was how he was going to live for the rest of his life. He almost did not want to try when his brother told him about a clinic in Tainan, specializing in stroke treatment. Almost. Luckily, his brother was not ready to give up on him. He would not stop bugging the then hopeless Huang. After persistent persuasion, on May 26th, 2017, Huang finally agreed to start a new treatment. Miracles do happen In the two months of his treatment, Huang had never felt more like a walking testament of God's miracle. His improvement was evident, one that everyone around him could feel and see. His hand was barely numb anymore, his muscles started to feel stronger, and most important of all, he could once again communicate with those he loves. Compared to his first visit to our clinic, where he appeared rather serious and anxious, Huang grew noticeably happier each time he came in for treatment. By the end of his treatment, he was a playful man constantly cracking jokes. Welcoming a life he hadn’t thought he would once again own, Huang walked out of our clinic with a big smile plastered on his face.

  • 11-day Miracle Treatment for Regaining Confidence

Name:Ms. Xu Age:52 Gender:Female Disease Type:Facial Paralysis Date of Diagnosis:2010 Chronic Disease:Hyperlipidemia Treatment period:June 19 to 30, 2017 (11 days, 6 treatments) 7 years of ineffective treatment, she was losing hope When Ms. Xu was first diagnosed with facial palsy in 2010, she was proactive to keep up her electrical stimulation treatment and oral medications. To no avail, her condition remained more or less the same. Which was why it felt like a miracle, after 7 years of ineffective treatments right when she was about to give up, to find 6 Shun Clinic just around the corner of her residence. She decided to give one last shot at treatment before completely giving up. Improvements she thought was impossible Slanted mouth, piercing pain on her forehead, and involuntary closing of the right eye were all symptoms of facial palsy of which she had been living with for the past 7 years. Along with frequent headaches of 20+ years, the daily battle with these symptoms made her depressed and anxious. She has lost her confidence and has forgotten what it feels to be happy. Her treatment at 6 Shun lasted for a brief 11 days, during which she visited 6 Shun 6 times, getting a shot every other day. Compared to the seven long tiresome years of searching for a cure, the treatment here at 6 Shun was exceptionally short, lasting for barely two weeks, but with surprising results. The tension in her lower limbs, as well as spasms, improved by a miraculous 50%, moreover, the 20+ year headache she’s been having since her 20s, almost never happens anymore. Ms. Xu could not imagine life if she hadn’t taken this last shot. Thinking back, she was glad she gave herself a chance at rebuilding confidence. She has recollected the courage to smile, and to face the world with eyes wide open.

  • Paralyzed by Three Strokes, Now Walking Again!

Name:Mr. Jiang Age:71 Gender:Male Diagnosis:Ischemic Stroke Date of Diagnosis:July 6th, 2019 Chronic Disease:hypertension, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia Treatment period:Aug. 8 to Sep. 2, 2019 (25 days, 10 treatments) You’ve heard of a second stroke, I’ve had three Mr. Jiang from Nantou, was a former taxi driver who was used to working through the night. After retirement, he picked-up farming and was working every day in the boiling heat under the scorching sun. His existing chronic disease and heart condition, ventricular hypertrophy, already put him at risk of developing stroke. Along with his labor-intensive work in intense heat, his body eventually gave in. What came next was a 20-year battle with stroke. Jiang began his battle with stroke 20 years ago. His first stroke greatly impacted his mental status. He suffered from impaired vision, and started having trouble recognizing friends. What’s more, the stroke had impaired his logic so much that he had to give up his favorite pastime, Mahjong, because it was clear that he would not win another game. 5 years ago, in 2015, he had a second stroke. Though luckily, the experience of the first stroke allowed him to react quick enough to make it to the hospital within the “three-hour prime treatment time,” but wasn’t enough to stop the stroke from happening. Jiang was put in thrombolytic therapy, and was discharged from the hospital after 15 days. Three years later, Jiang suffered from yet another stroke — his third — in July of 2019. Post-stroke, he started experiencing symptoms such as dizziness, tension in the lower body, and difficulty walking. Unfortunately, the third time was not the charm. Unable to receive thrombolytic therapy for missing his “three-hour prime treatment time,” there was no other treatment for Jiang. The right side of his body became semi-paralyzed. While Mr. Jiang was battling with his disease, Mrs. Jiang was fighting one of her own. Couldn’t bear to see her husband suffer anymore, Mrs. Jiang was set on finding him a cure, something the hospital was clearly unable to provide. As if it was destiny, Mrs. Jiang learned about the Liu Shun stroke treatment through the family of Jiang’s next-bed neighbor. I went from paralyzed in a wheelchair to standing up to walk in a year It was Father’s Day in Taiwan when Jiang came to Liu Shun for the first time. Upon first impression, Jiang was pale, weak, and tired. Sitting in his wheelchair, he could hardly support his own weight, much less sit up straight. Every few minutes, Mrs. Jiang, besides him, had to pull him back up to stop Jiang from sliding completely off his chair. It was a harsh sight to take in, especially considering the occasion being Father’s Day. Thankfully, Mr. Jiang was progressing at impressive speed since the beginning of his treatment. On just his third treatment, we began to see promising movements in Jiang’s toes and lower body. Mrs. Jiang also shared with us that her husband was communicating with more clarity, beginning to have more strength and energy, and could now eat through the mouth without the feeding tube. However, Jiang’s recovery journey wasn’t a simple straight line as it might have seemed. Jiang almost gave up on treatment at one point. When Jiang pulled his arm muscle doing physical therapy and was told he would never be able to move his arm again, he lost all hope and wanted to give up. Luckily, thanks to his loving wife and the encouragement of our case managers, Jiang successfully completed all ten treatments with astounding results. Not only could he move his arm, he could even play arm wrestle with our case managers! Jiang’s chronic disease and heart condition put him at risk of stroke, which is likely why he had suffered three strokes. Being the at risk population, Jiang understands the importance of coming back for check-ups. He returns every three months for scheduled continual treatments as a method of stroke prevention. It’s been a year since he had a stroke and now he has almost returned to normal, with good strength and energy, the ability to converse fluently, and walk. His admirable dedication to his recovery is the reason for all his improvements.
